A biochar producer can have material sitting in inventory while a buyer struggles to find a usable supply. At first, that sounds contradictory. If the product exists and the customer needs it, why does a transaction not happen?

The answer is that "biochar" is not one uniform product. The feedstock, conversion conditions, particle size, moisture, ash, surface characteristics, contaminants, handling, storage, and post-processing can all affect whether a material fits a particular use. A buyer usually does not need biochar in the abstract. The buyer needs a material that performs a specific job.

Start with the customer's problem

Picture a grower who buys biochar on paper specifications, then finds it is too fine and dusty to run through the spreader already sitting in the equipment shed. The material is real biochar. It simply cannot be applied with the equipment on hand, so it stays in the bag. A remediation contractor may care instead about how a carbon material interacts with a particular contaminant. A concrete specialist may need predictable physical and chemical characteristics that fit an established mix design. Each customer is asking a different question, even when all of them use the word biochar.

That is why project development should begin with the customer's problem and desired result, before committing to a machine or relying on available inventory.

Translate the application into performance requirements

Once the use is clear, the next step is defining what the material must do. That may involve handling, blending, durability, adsorption, nutrient interaction, water behavior, consistency, or another application-specific requirement. The useful specification comes from the application and the experts who understand it.

Match material characteristics and testing

The producer then needs to show that the material has the characteristics the application requires. The right testing plan depends on the use. A broad laboratory report can be useful, but more data is not automatically better. Testing should answer the buyer's actual decision questions and help identify whether the material needs screening, sizing, blending, pelletizing, activation, different storage, or a change in production conditions.

Consistency matters as much as a promising first sample. Commercial buyers need to understand whether later batches will stay within an acceptable range and how the material is stored, identified, and delivered.

Build the commercial pathway

Even a technically suitable material may not create a viable transaction if the volume, packaging, freight, storage, price, or timing does not work. The commercial model has to connect producer economics with the buyer's delivered cost and operating needs.

This is the missing middle in many emerging carbon-material markets: translating a buyer's application into a qualified, consistent, logistically workable supply.
